Can you smoke out your headlights?
At the time there were really only two ways to blackout your headlights: either by placing a grille or ventshade in front of it or by painting the lens.
This later method of painting one’s headlights also became know as “smoking” due to the gray or charcoal appearance of the light after it was painted.

Do smoked headlights affect visibility?
Yes it does, but the amount of tinting determines how much the visibility is affected. Lighter tint films will hardly produce any noticeable deterioration in headlight strength. Dark tints like the one shown in the beginning of this thread, can cause a significant loss in the headlight beam strength.
Are smoked tail lights illegal?
Many states have laws that completely ban tints. It’s illegal to put any kind of spray or film over your lights. Some declare headlights must be white or yellow, and rear lights be red. They also specify that the lights on your car must be visible from a certain distance, usually around 500 feet.
